I am studying Quran in multiple iterations.
The first iteration is when I read a word to word translation, and some basic grammar of any ayaat which I am memorizing.
The second is our family tafseer time in which we study around 5 ayaat a day. We read a word to word translation, discuss grammar, read a couple of tafaseer for the ayaat and discuss the ayaat, what lessons can be drawn from those ayaat, and how we can apply them to our daily life.
The third iteration is my personal study, where I read the grammar, research the Arabic words through classical dictionaries, try to read and understand around 3 classical tafaseer in Arabic, and around 3-4 contemporary tafaseer in English or Urdu. I also listen to any lectures I may find on these ayaat. And then I annotate the text of the ayaat with snippets of what I have learned. And during our Quran study time we use these notes to learn and discuss.
Needless to say this iteration takes the longest of times and is the most beneficial, Alhamdulillah. My goal for this iteration is to do it cover to cover.
You can read more about the books and other resources I use here.
So in order to pass the light on, and to get additional reward if anyone of you is uses them, I am sharing these notes here for the benefit of other students of Quran.
May Allah accept and increase us in beneficial knowledge and may He grant us the ability to practice what we learn. As knowledge without practice is as a donkey laden with books in the sight of Allah. Ameen.
Few Notes About The Notes
- These notes are in PDF form. You will need to download the PDF and view it in Adobe Reader. The web preview may not display the annotations properly or may not show them at all.
- Each PDF has some Quranic text, along with two English translations (Muhsin Khan and Mufti Taqi Uthmani). The text is then annotated with sticky notes and highlights providing grammar and vocabulary notes, explanations and reflections, and saheeh ahadeeth pertaining to the explanation of the ayaah.
- The annotations are color-coded for my own reference but you can ignore the difference of colors.
- These notes were made for my own reference. You may find them a little cryptic here and there. Please excuse as I didn’t have enough time to format and edit them in too much detail.
- These notes can not replace a tafseer book. They are to supplement the study of any tafseer book. Check out the books I am using here.
- You will find references in notes like “Read more about it in MQ” MQ stands for Marif al Quran. (See more about Marif al Quran here).
- You are free to share and use the notes for non-commercial use only.
May Allah accept our efforts in the understanding and service of His Word. Ameen.
