بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم
In sura al Baqara, Allaah (subhanahu wa Taala) tells us the story of Banu Israel and mentions their shortcomings as an example for us.
One of the things Allah mentions is that they didn’t know anything about their book, they did not know what it mean or what message it was giving them and as a result if some corrupt rabais told them lies about their book, if someone told them any fanciful things, any false promises, they would believe it. Although they used to recite their book.
And among them are unlettered ones who do not know the Scripture except in wishful thinking, but they are only assuming. [Al-Baqarah:78]
Al-Baqarah:78
As I read this ayah, it was as if I was reading the description of our ummah and not banu Israel. It is a scary thing. We as an ummah recite Quran so much, day in and day out and yet 90 % of our population doesn’t understand a word they are reading.
And as a result we get caught up in superstitious bluff so easily. Social media is filled with false interpretations of ayaat, false ahadeeth and wrong information about Islam and we just swallow everything because we do not know anything ourselves.
We have turned Quran into a book of spells. I am not saying that the ayaat of Allaah do not contain shifaa. But the primary purpose of Quran is to give guidance. Look at how Allaah introduces us to His book. “This is guidance for those who want to protect themselves” (sura Al Baqara ayat 2). And how are we supposed to receive guidance if we do not understand a word of it?
Quran is like a user manual given to us by Allah. A modus operandi for this world. May Allah grant us the ability to benefit.
سبحانك اللهم و بحمدك نشهد ان لااله الّا انت نستغفرك و نتوب اليك
Ameen. You are so right about us only pulling out the Quran when we want to heal from disease or disaster. It’s so much more than that.
